OFX brings to you one of the most influential films in cinematic history, a joint collaboration of Italy and Algeria, as well as one that remains unfortunately relevant in contemporary life. Italian director Gillo Pontecorvo depicts the Battle of Algiers, part of the greater Algerian War fought from 1954 to 1962, the struggle of revolutionaries fighting to destroy colonialism and systemic violence and injustices forced on them by the French. These revolutionaries engage in full-scale guerrilla war against their colonizers, one that engages the power of entire communities. Pontecorvo’s film is a stunning depiction of organized defense and decolonization, so much so that governments use it as counter-insurgency training to this day.
