The Harder They Come (1972)

  • 701 W Sheridan Ave Oklahoma City, OK 73102 (map)

Our only non-American film in this week, The Harder They Come is a Jamaican crime film credited with popularizing reggae on a global scale. Though not taking place in the United States, this film hits on familiar themes of social inequities, leading musician Jimmy Cliff’s character Ivan to record a song that becomes an anthem against capitalism, authority, and the effects of centuries of colonialism. This film was a sensation, as Black Jamaicans praised its use of location and Jamaican Patois language, in addition to being one of the first times Black Jamaicans saw themselves represented on screen. After being distributed to the United States by Roger Corman, the film became a cult classic at midnight screenings. Come hang out with OFX, listen to the sounds of Jimmy Cliff and other reggae stars, and sit back for an action-packed time at the movies.
