Jumping to the recent past, Deep Cover sets itself in the contemporary world and switches its lens to the role of Black officers formally employed in federal law enforcement, not just recruited as informants. Police officer-turned-DEA Agent Russell Stevens (Laurence Fishburne) must infiltrate and bust a drug ring, a plot that examines stereotypes and exploitation employed by our law enforcement institutions. Released in the same year as Malcolm X, Deep Cover comes at the threshold of the emerging '“Dirty Cop” subgenre and the wide-reaching media exposure of police brutality. OFX partner Dalton Stuart is joined by local artist and comedian Chandler Watson for what is considered director Bill Duke’s masterpiece.
