For this month’s movie night with the Central Oklahoma Labor Federation, OFX and COLF bring you On the Waterfront (1954), one of the greatest films ever made about labor unions, social classes, and corruption. We’ll talk about the context in which this film was made, a turbulent historical period where McCarthyism loomed over the country as well as Hollywood. Director Elia Kazan was directly embroiled in the conflict between an anti-communist government and Hollywood creatives, informing the creation of this film.
Marlon Brando stars as Terry Malloy, a dockworker with a promising boxing career until a local mob boss interferes. When a longshoreman is murdered, Terry struggles to fight the corruption of the local mob and its influence on the unions.
