For this month’s Central Oklahoma Labor Federation movie night, OFX presents 10,000 Black Men Named George, a 2002 made-for-TV film that dramatizes the work of union activist Asa Philip Randolph, played by the last Andre Braugher. In the 1920s, Randolph organized the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first Black-led union organization to be recognized by the AFL. Coinciding with MLK Jr. Day, A. Philip Randolph and others’ activism would pave the way for the Civil Rights Movement a few decades later, with Randolph seen as one of the most prominent spokespeople of the movement and a collaborator of Dr. King.
