For our last screening of the month, OFX is excited to bring you what is largely considered to be John Cassavetes’ magnum opus, A Woman Under the Influence. Gena Rowlands portrays Mabel, a wife and mother whose mental state becomes increasingly erratic, much to the dismay and confusion of her husband, played by Peter Falk, children, and their family friends. True to form, Cassavetes empathetically depicts the tenderness and turmoil of a marriage and family impacted by a mental health crisis, with Gena Rowlands carefully unweaving Mabel’s mania with a fraught, intense authenticity. This film is a landmark of independent filmmaking, with all of the skills and talents you can’t teach on display by Cassavetes, Rowlands, and Falk.
