To kick off the first night of his first OKC-hosted retrospective, Mickey Reece has selected the 2023 short film Kondo and 2019 feature Climate of the Hunter, which had its world premiere in September 2019 at Austin’s Fantastic Fest. It was a follow-up to Strike, Dear Mistress and Cure His Heart, Reece’s breakout film from the same festival the previous year. While Climate was well received, it didn’t make as much of a splash elsewhere until August 2020 at Fantasia Fest in Montreal. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canadian festival was fully online, but to Climate’s benefit, a significant number of critics had more flexible schedules and were watching from the comfort of their own homes. Climate of the Hunter was praised by the majority and is now, almost six years later, widely considered a cult film.
Although the movie was shot near Tahlequah, Oklahoma in February 2019, it has only been screened in Oklahoma City once, in August 2020 at Rodeo Cinema. On Thursday, January 15 at 7PM, join Mickey Reece and some surprise guests from Climate of the Hunter for a Q&A moderated by TIFF Midnight Madness programmer Peter Kuplowsky following its second screening in Oklahoma. All screenings are first-come, first-serve pay-what-you-can admission.
With your written permission, you may also be featured in a film project that blurs the line between fiction and reality, shooting simultaneously during the three-night retrospective.
