Come kick off our week of Black cinema at OFX, in honor of Black History Month! Our series starts with Spike Lee’s Malcolm X (1992), an epic biographical film about the revolutionary activist Malcolm X, that follows his life through his earliest days to his assassination in 1965. Denzel Washington delivers a powerful performance as Malcolm X, grounded and magnificent, as befits such a legend. Though its subject is historical, it bears more resemblance to contemporary society than not, released only months after the 1992 Los Angeles riots, with its teachings and themes increasingly more resonant today. See this one in a theater—you won’t want to miss it.
